Another map-based piece

These are the formative stages, of course, there's a lot more I want to do with this piece before it's finished.  It's kind of a 3D drawing, showing parts of the neolithic city at Çatalhöyük.

The concept here is quite similar to that of the Knossos floor plan sculpture I made a while back, but with a different city.

Çatalhöyük was a very large settlement in what is now Turkey, occupied between around 7500 and 5700 BCE.  It is distinctive for having produced what is often believed to be the world's first map - a wall painting showing images that look very much like Çatalhöyük houses.

In fact there's a bit of debate over whether the painting is really a map.  Yes, it probably shows houses, but does it show specific houses intended to represent a section of the Çatalhöyük city?  There's really no way to know, because the inhabitants of Çatalhöyük had no writing system.

My sculpture shows the Çatalhöyük map (or "map" if you prefer), alongside plans of some of the actual buildings from the city.
